After leaving school, Louis Beswick became the first apprentice of Total Refrigeration, a well known North West based refrigeration company. After gaining hands-on experience and a keen insight into the business, he decided to take his knowledge and form his own new company, with a vision to grow and to support his growing family.
BRS is born
On 20th May 1980 to be precise, Beswick Refrigeration Services is registered as a business, providing commercial refrigeration services to Bakeries, Pubs, Butchers and local shops in the North West of England. A proud family man, Louis, wife Elaine and eldest son James welcomed second son Gareth into the world in 1980 too, another milestone and challenge whilst starting the fledgling business. A growing family inspired Louis to work harder than ever, providing for them and offering a premium service to his ever growing list of customers.
BRS – Onward and Upward
BRS moved from its modest shop location at Hillgate, Stockport to a new 2000 sq ft workshop and office space unit, the Expodite Works in Bredbury, providing more flexibility and efficiency to service customers, now based all across the UK.
BRS becomes a true family business
Louis’s eldest son James begins a 4 year Refrigeration Mechanical & Electrical apprenticeship at Openshaw Technical College, the start of a successful career at BRS for James which continues through to the present day.
A growing Service network and enhanced capabilitiess
Young Gareth Beswick starts work as an office administrator with BRS. Gareth’s experience with new technology helps convince Boss and Dad Louis to migrate the business from a hand written system to use of a type writer and to finally to make the transition to computer.
At this point in time, Air Conditioning was becoming a standard product offering for modern office spaces and meeting rooms. This saw BRS form an Air Conditioning installation team to provide a wide portfolio of Air Conditioning products, with specification, design, supply, installation and commissioning, all backed up by a continued maintenance program for the life cycle of the product.
The development and manufacture of Refrigeration products was always a speciality of BRS, with a strong focus on bespoke plant room design and the manufacture of Process Chilled Water and Glycol Systems. BRS is now servicing the whole of the UK and Ireland with Bakery Cooling Systems the main focus of the business.
Enduring Chilled Water Plant Rooms
BRS Design & Build 50kW modular chilled water plant rooms and distribute throughout the UK mainstream bakeries.
All are still in operation to this day with only one compressor failure in that time.
Cream of the crop Servicing
With BRS heavily involved with temperature control applications within UK bakeries, bespoke ‘Cream Yeast’ system servicing and engineering are added to its portfolio of services . This vital area of cooling was a unique add-on and soon developed and led to a separate Process Engineering arm of the business.
BRS partner with trusted suppliers
To further ensure product quality and reliability in an ever more competitive packaging market, BRS turned to Daikin to supply chillers, based on the quality of product and wide selection available.
A triple whammy for BRS
BRS designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the first triple ring main, fully automatic Cream Yeast System complete with 3 tank CIP system and bespoke cooling to ensure product quality and longevity, accurate temperature control and Hygienic distribution.
A transitional period, James and Gareth take the reins
Due to ill health, Louis Beswick was forced to step back and leave the running of the business to his sons. The difficult decision was made to dissolve the partnership and create a new Limited company, Beswick Refrigeration Services Ltd, with sons James and Gareth Beswick taking ownership and carrying on the family business with its name, values and tradition.
From 2014 Beswick Refrigeration Services continued to evolve and build on its 3 pillars of service ‘Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Process Engineering’. With a keen ambition and drive to grow, the Beswick brothers embarked on a journey of building an organisational culture based on the following Core Values:

From Strength to Strength - BRS Continues to Grow
To enable further growth, BRS recruited additional engineers and formed the current management team with a keen focus on in-house training and apprenticeship schemes. BRS has grown year-on-year and gone from strength to strength with a UK based engineering team of 20, covering areas from London and the far South through to Scotland & Ireland. With full Stainless Steel manufacturing facilities located in Swadlincote, Derbyshire and Head offices and workshop in Bredbury, where operations and refrigeration services are carried out from, plans are underway for a further re-location to new Head Office premises in 2020.
BRS provides service, maintenance, design, supply, installation and commissioning of temperature controlled solutions, liquid pumping systems and engineering services to companies such as: Warburtons, Morrisons manufacturing, Hovis, Molson Coors, Fine Lady Bakeries, Lallemand, Greencore ‘Food To go’ Greencore ‘Ready Meals’ Fourpure Brewng, Kimberly Clark and many more and is proud to be associated partners of Daikin, YORK and Endress & Hauser.

2020 is a landmark 40 years of business for Beswick Refrigeration Services (BRS).
